10 Inspirational Quotes for Facilities Managers

    Tiffany Bloodworth Rivers

We believe this year will bring lots of opportunity and advancement in the FM industry. As workspaces evolve, we must adapt to meet the changing demands. To keep our motivation levels up, here are 10 inspirational quotes facilities managers can keep on hand throughout the year. We've also included a few quotes from our new book on the future of the workspace titled, Wide Open Workspace.

    On belief:

"Whether or not you think you can, or you think you can't - you're right." -- Henry Ford, founder of Ford Motor Company.

Being a facilities manager means people rely on you for guidance, trusting yourself is the first step.

    On failure:

"I've missed more than 900 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed." -- Michael Jordan, NBA Champion.

Sports champions and business champions realize that to win and to be successful they must take risks. Sometimes they will miss their shot and other times they will make it!

    On preparation:

"The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now." -- Chinese Proverb.

Don't linger in the past, but focus on what you can do now to lay out a better tomorrow.

    On change:

"Your title, and your roles, may be unique. But no mater what you are called, we'll wage that you have many, many tasks. You're doing all the basic blocking and tacking...and chances are your role is changing." -- Wide Open Workspace.

As a FM you're responsible for more each day, take it as an opportunity to challenge yourself, as your role changes you are only increasing your experience and gaining new strengths.

    On fear:

"Fearlessness is not the absence of fear. It's the mastery of fear. It's about getting up more times than we fall down."  -- Arianna Huffington, editor-in-chef of The Huffington Post.

You're going to make mistakes, the key is to learn from them, and get up to try again. Don't allow them to hinder your accomplishments for the future.

    New call-to-action

    On innovation:

"We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them." -- Albert Einstein, theoretical physicist.

Being adaptive to change is essential in our changing workplace, we must learn to be creative in our approach or we will never discover anything new.

    On leadership:

"Being a trailblazer often means going off the beaten path." -- Wide Open Workspace.

In such an influential position, FMs must be ready to take on the challenge of leading others, even when it's towards a different direction than before.

    On the future:

"The reasonable man adopts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself" -- George Bernard Shaw, co-founder of The London School of Economics.

The future of the workspace is changing, quickly. It's important for facilities managers to stay open to new ideas and concepts that present themselves.

    On opportunity in FM:

"The open range serves as an excellent metaphor for today's modern workspace- unbounded, uncharted to a large extent, and full of opportunities." -- Wide Open Workspace.

There are so many challenges ahead, which can be exciting for those working in the industry.

    On discovery:

"Discovery is seeing what everybody else has seen, and thinking what nobody else has thought." -- Albert Szent-Gyorgi, Nobel Prize Winner.
